The
Museum ticket allows you to visit also the Belverde caves. The
prehistorical settlement rises some kilometres away from Cetona, so
you must drive along the Strada della Montagna. (On the way you can
visit the Franciscan Friary, founded by St. Francis in 1212, now
"Comunità di Mondo X".) Not very far from the entrance to
the caves there is an information point where you can refresh. The
prehistorical settlement in the Belverde area is very important: it is
possible to visit some of the travertine caves, such as the
"Grotta di S. Francesco", the "Antro della Noce e del
Poggetto", il "Riparo del Caprio". The caves,
surrounded by rich vegetation, are connected to the Franciscan
Hermitage of Santa Maria di Belverde, built in the 14th century.
The church, made up of three overlapped little churches, shows
important frescoes by the Senese School (14th-15th centuries) and by
the painter Cola Petruccioli from Orvieto (14th century). After the
visit you can have a walk in the "Biancheto", quite wood
where you find a picnic area. |
