You can go to the higher part of Cetona walking
through Via Roma: on the right you find the "Torre del Rivellino"
(the Rivellino Tower). On the left there is a cellar where it is
possible to taste wine, good cheese and salami. At the top of the climb,
on the left, you find the Town Hall (Palazzo Minutelli-Cioli). On the
ground floor there is the "Museo Civico per la Preistoria del Monte
Cetona" (the Municipal Museum of the Mount Cetona Prehistory): it
shows the different periods of the human settlement from the middle
Paleolith to the end of the Bronze Age. The most part of the findings
come from the Belverde area. Panels, cards, dioramas and plastic models
give explanations about the exhibited archeologic material.Going on you
find the little square of the Collegiata (Collegiate Church) with its
old cistern well. (From there it is possible to see the room of the
Castle Guardroom - private property - and the statue of the Madonna
fixed on the rocks.) Then you pass under the Brugi arch: at the fork
turn to the right (Via della Steccato) for a wonderful view of Mount
Cetona and the countryside. When you are back at the fork, you can go
uphill through the "costa del Prete" (the priest's slope) and
then turn to the left: Via della Fortezza you reach a terrace
dominating the Collegiata square (now you have the Castle Guardroom
behind you). There are some benches: stop there and look at the
wonderful landscape. From there you go to the "Cittadella" (citadel),
another panoramic terrace. The yellow building you see is the Villa della
Vagnola or Parco Terrosi (visits allowed only in some periods of the
year - in its gardens some monuments testify Garibaldi's stay and the
birth of famous Cetonese people, such Luca Contile. There is also an
Etruscan tomb coming from the Chiusi territory.) The gate behind you is
the entrance of the Rocca (the castle, private property). The visit to
Cetona is finished: you can come back to Piazza Garibaldi walking down
through Via G. Marconi or going downstairs through Via Volpini (you are
in Via Roma again, so turn to the right). If you want more information
about Cetona, you can read a little book entitled "Cetona - Un
viaggio nel tempo" sold at the Tourist Office.
